Alternative Licensure

Individuals seeking information about alternative pathways to licensure should refer to the Ohio Department of Education website: http://www.ode.state.oh.us. For alternative pathways, teacher preparation institutions do not submit programs for approval to the Ohio Department of Education. We cannot review transcripts and resumes to determine if sufficient course work and/or work experience is evidenced. Request for review of transcripts and résumés should be sent to:

The Ohio Department of Education
Office of Certification/Licensure
25 South Front Street
Mail Stop 105
Columbus , Ohio 43215-4183
614.466.3593

Because the Ohio Department of Education does not approve programs in advance, we are somewhat hesitant to offer advice on which courses should be taken to meet requirements specified in the alternative pathways legislation. However, we believe that EDTE 660/660L meets the requirement for a methods course and the EDTE 560 meets the requirement for the adolescent development course. We do not have a recommendation for undergraduate courses that meet the requirements. To take these courses, you must apply and be accepted in a graduate program in the College of Education (either as a degree or non-degree student).

An individual who wishes to pursue coursework at Ohio University with alternative pathways to licensure in mind must meet the following requirements:

  • The individual must have completed an undergraduate degree
  • The individual must apply for and be admitted to an M.Ed. program in the Department of Teacher Education. Admission information is available from:

Ohio University 's Office of Graduate Student Services
McKee House
740.593.2800
Fax: 740.593.4625
http://www.ohiou.edu/graduate

  • The individual must have submitted appropriate transcripts and a résumé of work experience to the Ohio Department of Education
  • The individual must have passed the appropriate PRAXIS II content exams
  • The individual must write a brief statement describing his/her career aspirations
