Assessment & Academic Improvement
Counselor & Student

The College of Education's teacher
and administrator preparation programs
are accredited by the National Council
for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

The Office of Assessment & Academic Improvement serves as the College of Education's coordination and collection point for data collection, analysis and reporting required by accrediting bodies (e.g., NCATE, ODE, CACREP).

To help address the nation's need for well-prepared educators, the College of Education seeks recognition from several accrediting bodies. Accreditation ensures the College and its programs meet or exceed professional standards and assures quality in the education profession.

The College of Education is accredited by the following organizations:

NCATE
The National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) is a national organization whose six standards must be met in order for teacher licensure programs to be accredited. Our most recent accreditation visit was April 2007 and we received Accreditation with probation. Our next NCATE onsite visit is scheduled for October, 2009.

Since 1954, the Ohio University College of Education has been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs. NCATE is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel.

Ohio Department of Education
The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) is the statewide accrediting and regulatory agency for all licensure school-related programs (i.e. teachers, principals, school counselors, school psychologists, etc.) in Ohio. All College licensure programs offered at Ohio University are under the aegis of the ODE and must submit periodic reports to this agency.

CACREP
The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council on Post-Secondary Accreditation (COPA), has conferred accreditation to the following program areas in Counselor Education at Ohio University: Community Counseling (M.Ed.), School Counseling (M.Ed.), and the Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision.

CORE
The Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE), has conferred accreditation on the M.Ed. Rehabilitation program. All College of Education programs, including Counselor Education, are also accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As a result, graduates are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure and national certifications in a shorter time following graduation. In addition, the program is also approved as meeting all requirements for State licensure through both the Ohio Counseling and Social Worker Board (PC/PCC) and the State Department of Education for school counseling.
