Upward Bound Students and Staff Summer Residential Phase 2008

Upward Bound Students and Staff
Summer Residential Phase 2008

Ohio University Upward Bound is a successful pre-college access program that was established in 1967 and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program recruits and provides educational, social and cultural services to potential first-generation college students from 15 high schools in southeast Ohio and surrounding areas. Participation is extended to eligible students who wish to make a commitment to their educational goals. Each participant is given the opportunity to develop the academic skills necessary to complete high school and successfully matriculate to postsecondary education.

Some of the main objectives of the program are to:

  • Develop and implement a curriculum that helps students actively pursue college upon graduation from high school
  • Increase motivation to attend college by providing opportunities to tour colleges and participate in career fairs
  • Increase social leadership and cultural awareness through diverse activities, workshops, and seminars

Eligibility is determined by the following:

  • Annual family income and/or
  • Potential first-generation college student status
  • Freshman or sophomore standing in an Upward Bound parntership high school
  • 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA

The Academic Year Phase is designed to provide additional academic support and development to students while they are enrolled in high school. Each student receives tutoring and advising, as well as assistance in preparing for and completing ACT/SAT registration and financial aid and college admission applications. Students are also required to attend monthly Saturday workshops on Ohio University's campus in an effort to increase their academic potential.

The Summer Residential Phase is six weeks of rigorous academic study. While living on Ohio University's campus in one of the residence halls, students are enrolled in academic, fine arts and college/career development courses. Cultural and social weekend activities are also provided for students during the summer session.

The college-like residence life experience during the six-week summer component creates an ideal opportunity for Upward Bound to broaden our students' overall perspective of the world around them.

Participating High Schools include: Alexander Local, Athens City, Chillicothe City, Crooksville Exempted Village, Eastern Local, Federal Hocking, Logan-Hocking, Meigs, Miller Local, Morgan Local, Nelsonville-York, River Valley, Southern, Trimble and Vinton County.
