Upward Bound Students and Staff |
The Ohio University Upward Bound Program is a successful pre-college program that was established in 1967 and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. The program recruits and provides educational, social and cultural services to potential first-generation college students from 16 high schools in Southeast Ohio and surrounding areas. Participation is extended to eligible students who wish to make a commitment to their educational goals. Each participant is given the opportunity to develop the academic skills necessary to complete high school and successfully matriculate to postsecondary education.
Some of the main objectives of the program are to:
Eligibility is determined by the following:
The Academic Year Phase is designed to provide additional academic support and development to students while they are enrolled in high school. Each student receives tutoring and career advising, as well as assistance in preparing for and completing ACT/SAT registration, financial aid and college admission applications. Students are also required to attend monthly Saturday workshops/tutorials on Ohio University's campus in an effort to increase their academic potential.
The Summer Residential Phase is six weeks of rigorous academic study. While living on Ohio University's campus in one of the residence halls, students are enrolled in academic, fine arts and college/career development courses. Cultural and social weekend activities are also provided for students during the summer session.

The college-like residence life experience during the six-week summer component creates an ideal opportunity for Upward Bound to further focus on diversity and bridge various cultural, socioeconomic and ethnic divides within our communities and broaden our students' overall perspective of the world around them.
Participating High Schools include: Alexander Local, Athens City, Chillicothe City, Columbus Africentric Secondary, Crooksville Exempted Village, Eastern Local, Federal Hocking, Logan-Hocking, Meigs, Miller Local, Morgan Local, Nelsonville-York, River Valley, Southern, Trimble and Vinton County.
