Frans Doppen, Teacher Education

Assistant Professor Frans Doppen

The Middle Childhood Education program is Nationally Recognized by the National Middle School Association (NMSA). Middle Childhood Education (MCE) prepares students for a license to teach grades 4 through 9 in elementary school upper primary grades, middle school, junior high school, or high schools (9th grade only). All Middle Childhood Education licensure programs require students to choose two subject content specializations. Four subject content specializations include:

  • Language arts
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Studies

Reading Endorsement
Any student who may be registered in one of four programs of study (Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, Adolescent-to-Young Adult, and Special Education) may add a reading endorsement to his/her license to teach reading in K-12, inclusive. Click to view and save information about the Reading Endorsement.

Middle Childhood Generalist Endorsement
Middle Childhood teachers are licensed to teach two content areas (Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, or Science) in grades 4-9. The Generalist Endorsement will allow licensed Middle Childhood teachers to add one or two additional content areas for grades 4-6. State requirements call for six semester hours for each content area plus the required Praxis exam for the content area. Since Ohio University operates on a quarter system, students will need nine quarter hours to meet state requirements. Click to view and save information about the Generalist Endorsement.
