Commitment to Diversity
dfg

COE McNair Scholars Mallory Cervantes
and Terrez Thomas aim to increase
diversity in the American professoriate.

The College of Education 2007-08 Dean's Advisory Committee on Diversity (DACD) is currently in the process of analyzing data, collecting resources and authoring the College's Commitment to Diversity.

The committee is guided by this charge from Dean Middleton:
In an effort to be systematic and intentional with respect to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty and student body, please develop a framework for Unit Diversity Plans. In the spring of 2007, I will be asking each department and unit head to develop diversity plans with a focus on racial/ethnic diversity. Because of our state's demographics, however, these plans should also include differences in gender orientation, socio-economic differences, disability, difference in family structures and international populations. I am asking this committee to develop a template for what should be included in our diversity plan. Minimally, I would like the plan to include the following:

  • Strategic Plan: How is the plan developed and who is involved?
  • Commitment to Diversity statement
  • Departmental/Unit Commitment: Who will be responsible for carrying out the plan? What resources are available? How is the commitment translated to the wider community?
  • Needs Assessment: What are the current demographics of the faculty? What is the current availability of racially/ethnically-diverse faculty in the disciplines? What are reasonable goals?
  • Goals: What are the goals? How are they determined? Are they specific and measurable?
  • Strategies: What are the strategies for recruiting and retaining racially/ethnically-diverse faculty? How are they developed?
  • Implementation: How and by whom? What is the timeline?
  • Evaluation
